This Week at Camarena

I hope you and your family enjoyed the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and three-day weekend.  My family and I were walking by Pacific Beach this morning and we couldn’t help appreciating the blessings of living in San Diego County as we enjoyed shirt sleeve weather in the middle of January.  So, we are all definitely refreshed and ready for the new week and here are the pertinent events on our school calendar.

Tuesday, January 20 – PTA Boot Camp (6:00 PM)

Wednesday, January 21 – Just another day of learning at Camarena

Thursday, January 22 – PTA Zumba (6:00 PM)

Friday, January 23 – Jump Rope for Heart Kickoff and 1:15 Release

Saturday, January 24 – Camarena Spelling Bee Championship.  Students who finished at the top of their class competition have been invited to our school finals this Saturday.  The winners will move on to the district finals in February.

Finally, I love the focus and attention that these 1st graders demonstrate in this short clip from Señorita Barrett’s class.  They are all working diligently on their narratives, using the resources in the room, revising as they write, and completely engrossed in the work of crafting their writing.   Great examples of how effort produces lasting and quality achievements.

And the Winner is …. 4th Grade

We have added a new feature to  our website in which we share our daily attendance by grade level. You can see the chart on the right side bar and mouse over each grade  level to see their attendance.  On our first day back from Winter Break 4th grade takes the prize with 98.7% attendance.  Our overall attendance today was 95.3%. So encourage your children to keep that strong attendance and they won’t miss out on spectacular events like this amazing Chilena and fantastic save at lunch recess.

New Year and Great Attendance

Amy July 4With the start of the New Year, many of us look to the calendar as impetus to make improvements in a variety of habits and practices.  Let me encourage you to put school attendance at the top of your list.  Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put your child behind in school. This is as true in transitional kindergarten as it is in sixth grade.  So make a commitment to send and keep your child is in school every day, beginning with this first day of school. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning every day.  But it’s harder to teach and it’s harder to learn when too many students are absent.  If missing school is unavoidable, talk to your children’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work.  So, help  your child develop the good habit of consistent and regular school attendance in 2015 and beyond.
