Sent on Behalf of Instructional Services and Support:
We want to share information provided by our EastLake Middle School partners about a series of incidents that occurred after school on Tuesday, May 26. The Chula Vista Police Department received reports yesterday afternoon that several students were robbed of cell phones and an iPad during at least two separate incidents as students made their way home from EastLake Middle School. Victims and witnesses reported the suspect had what appeared to be a gun. Detectives have linked another possible case on April 30, also in the afternoon hours, to these robberies. There may be additional cases based on the similarities (time, locations, and Method of Operation). CVPD is asking the public to contact Detective Molina at (619) 691-5178 with any information about the incidents.
We ask that you please take a moment to talk to your student(s) about being aware of surroundings as they make their way to and from school, walk with friends when possible, and to be vigilant while using phones or electronics in public areas. Talk to your child about the importance of reporting any suspicious activity to you, to school staff, or the police. Our mutual goal is to keep students safe at all times.
Please remember that students and family members are not permitted to use the play structure when Camarena staff are not present for supervision. There have been several children playing before school and after school and we need to remind you that this is not permissible. Thanks in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
It may not be common knowledge to parents and visitors that children and adults have separate bathrooms on Elementary schools campuses. We are working on modifying our signage here at Camarena to make that reality a little more visible. We would appreciate your attention and cooperation in this matter. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
We are taking every precaution to keep our students safe from the heat during the past few days. Both yesterday (Monday) and today we have had modified lunch recess (30 minutes instead of 45) and students are holding their recess time inside the class, where the air conditioning is working beautifully. At lunchtime, students are eating on the covered lunch area then going inside the cool auditorium to wait for their teachers. Hopefully the temperatures will drop by Wednesday so that we can resume normal outdoor activities.
Dear Camarena Parents,
I would like to inform you that today we were notified by public health that we have had a confirmed case of pertussis (whooping cough) in a student who was ill last week. A notice provided by the San Diego County Public Health Department has been attached. Please refer to this letter for all information that you will need about what to do next.

Greetings Camarena Families – You should receive a phone call with details of the shelter in place mode that was activitated today. Based on recommendations form the Chula Vista Police Department, out of precaution we did go into a Shelter in Place mode from approximately 1:15 to 1:45. At not time was the safety of any children in danger. It was purely precautionary based on some criminal activity in the neighborhood. Our students and staff responded commendably and we were supported at all times by the presence of the Chula Vista Police Department.
If you are wondering about the guidelines for when you should keep a sick child home, you can get that information from our district website here:
I’ve also added the guidelines below for your convenience.

We are ready to get our Safety Patrol out on the corners and we would like to solicit the assistance of a few noble Camarena parents or community members. If you are willing and able to assist, please e-mail or call Mrs. Orr firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks in advance for your consideration.
